“Many people do not give creative arts the weight that they do sports and athletic activities. This is a chance for us to invest in the children in our community who love music and theatre and dance. This is a chance for us to show everyone what a benefit this arts center will be.”
Sue Waite-York, HCAC Fundraising Committee

Why Do We Need A Community Arts Center?

February 23rd, 2007 by fgrant

HCAC as an educational arts center
The entire community will benefit from greater space for youth and adult programming and significantly more opportunities for music, art, dance, theatre, lectures and seminars. HCAC will meet the cultural needs of a growing community and eliminate crowded educational space for high school and middle school students. Southern Aroostook residents will benefit from a modern, spacious facility that brings together choral and instrumental music, visual arts, dance, sculpture, and other arts.

HCAC as an economic development tool
The rapidly expanding creative sector is a significant factor in Maine’s economic development. From music to art, communities are enhanced through the establishment of greater creative arts opportunities. The Houlton Community Arts Center will be an economic stimulus in northern Maine, improving the quality of life for residents of Aroostook County. The center will assist in attracting a more mobile and educated workforce, promoting cultural tourism, and encouraging entrepreneurial activity.

HCAC as a proving ground for young student talent
This new innovative space will provide an arts wing that includes band and chorus space, a dance theatre, rehearsal space and a creative arts room. Students will have enhanced opportunities to develop and hone their creative arts abilities in a supportive and nurturing environment.

I am a student attending Houlton High School and started playing in the band in 5th grade. Most of the graduates from Houlton understand how limited the space is in the Music Department of our school. Not to mention our lack of equipment. Everyday there are complaints from the students of not having enough space, chairs, or music stands. To have a larger and more essential fine arts center, it would benefit, not only our school, but our community. It will take time and an incredible amount of money to put this together, but it is severely needed. If we can achieve being a good band, we can achieve being an outstanding band. This new addition will help tremendously.
